No matter how you give birth - medicated or unmedicated, vaginal or cesarean - it’s likely to be the most intense experience of your life. Birthing From Within childbirth education prepares you for this intensity and helps you navigate the unexpected twists and turns that the journey is sure to bring.
Some parents wonder why they should take childbirth education (or newborn care, or breastfeeding) classes when they can just find the relevant facts in books or online. There’s a good answer to this question: childbirth is more like swimming than algebra - it’s primarily a physical and emotional experience, rather than an intellectual one. Learning facts alone will no more prepare you for the experience of childbirth than learning about pool rules and the chemical composition of water will prepare you for the experience of swimming. Childbirth education classes give parents the opportunity to not only learn facts, but also achieve the deeper understandings that can only come from working with an experienced mentor.
My classes are certainly fact-rich: I provide parents with up-to-date, evidence-based information about pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, as well as clear descriptions of stages of labor, pain coping techniques, and medical support (“interventions”). But just as importantly, I provide for additional layers of exploration and understanding through hands-on activities, physical practice, open discussion, and examination of multiple perspectives. It's this combination of intellectual understanding and physical and emotional preparation that makes the Birthing From Within childbirth education experience so valuable.
In addition to being a Birthing From Within Advanced Mentor, I am a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator, DONA trained birth doula, and mother of two. I have experienced birth and childbirth education from so many different points of view, and I bring this tapestry of knowledge and experience to all of the parents with whom I work. I teach with a practical, nonjudgmental attitude, and my classes are always engaging, challenging, and fun.
