Babywearing from Within: Supporting Your Clients' Babywearing Needs, Fri. 11/16

Friday, November 16, 12:00PM-3:00PM

Workshop will be held at the Birthing From Within New York teaching studio in Central Harlem; address will be sent after registration.

Most perinatal professionals know how helpful babywearing can be, especially in the early months of parenthood. But it can be tricky to offer useful guidance: there are just so many different carriers on the market, clients often have such specific questions and needs, and often clients’ babywearing experiences and approaches don’t necessarily line up with our own.

And, as with other newborn care matters (breastfeeding, sleep, diapering, etc), babywearing can sometimes become an emotional flashpoint, both affecting and reflecting a parent’s confidence and sense of self-worth as a parent.

So what’s a well-intentioned professional to do? Babywearing from Within to rescue!

In this thoughtful, practical workshop, we will explore:

  • The benefits of and reasons for babywearing. (You probably already know these!)

  • What it means for a carrier to be “safe,” and how to interact with clients’ safety concerns.

  • Various categories of carriers. How are different carriers generally used? Why do people tend to choose a certain category over another?

  • How to support parents in choosing baby carriers. What do you say when a parent asks, “What’s the best baby carrier?” What really matters - and doesn’t matter - in carrier choices? How can you tell if a carrier is a good fit for a certain parent? What if the parents’ opinions and approaches diverge from yours?

  • How to support parents in using baby carriers. What does it mean when a parents says that a certain carrier “doesn’t work”? How do you adjust a baby carrier to make it more comfortable or better-fitting? How do you troubleshoot babywearing difficulties?

In addition to “lecture” and plenty of dialogue addressing your (and your clients’) particular concerns, the class will include try-on time during which we will work with weighted dolls and demo carriers to get a feel for how various carriers work and feel. If you are a postpartum doula with your own carriers, please feel free to bring them for adjustment and fitting.

*Note: This is NOT a parent class. While of course many perinatal professionals are also currently engaged in wearing their own children, and of course our personal experiences will always inform our professional life and vice versa, the purpose of this class is to examine babywearing from the point of view of a professional support provider. If you are primarily seeking to clarify your own questions about your own babywearing practice, please sign up for my babywearing class for parents, EVEN IF YOU ARE A PROFESSIONAL.

If you are experiencing financial hardship, please inquire about sliding scale fees and payment plans:

Class fee is nonrefundable. If you are unable to attend the class for which you registered, we will transfer your registration to a future class with a $20 rescheduling fee.
